Depo-Provera is a hormonal contraceptive injection containing medroxyprogesterone acetate, a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1992, it is marketed as a way to prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and thinning the uterine lining to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg.

Although Depo-Provera has long been promoted as a safe and convenient birth control option, a growing number of adverse events have been reported to the FDA in recent years. Recent medical studies suggest that women who use Depo-Provera for more than one year may have a fivefold increased risk of developing meningioma brain tumors.

Despite this, it appears that Pfizer was or should have been aware of this risk, yet warnings about the possibility of meningioma or other brain tumors as a side effect of Depo-Provera have not been communicated to the public or the medical community.
